The Met Line was busy with Chelsea and Manchester City supporters as we made our way to Steve’s Saturday afternoon walk from Stanmore to Hatch End. Eight of us met at Stanmore station and admired the art deco houses on the route to Stanmore country park. We soon left suburbia behind for the grassland, ponds and woodland.
Despite the lack of sunshine we had good views of Wembley Stadium and London high rises from Wood Farm Viewpoint.
At the Bentley Priory estate we visited the ‘Master’ oak, thought to be about four hundred years old.
Near Old Redding we came to Copse Farm where Steve told us the story of Suzanne’s Riding School, founded by Suzanne Marczak when she was a teenager in 1939 and run by her until 2004 when it closed due to high running costs. It has been sold to a development company but still lies derelict.
As we reached the Uxbridge road we saw the strange sight of dinosaurs at Jurassic Island Adventure Golf. From there it was a short walk to Hatch End station.
We thanked Steve for this surprisingly green walk and all agreed we had never suspected there were such lush green spaces hidden a short distance from the busy road.
